Over 380+ podcasts are not posted yet, as these podcasts need to be screened for adherence to mixcloud rules that affect musicians' royalties. I usually do not have time for this overwhelming task of hours of radio editing. I have the playlists in books of over 380 podcasts that I normally do not have time to edit according to the mixcloud restrictions of track limitations ...a bucket list and enormous task, I hope to get to this task regularly in the future, but only if inspired. Composers should ALWAYS get their royalties, agreed definitely 100% and I would love to post the best of the shows. (Website donations will permit me to get to this task.) Got a favourite show? Let me know!

Dear Rhythm'a'ning Fans:
Have you heard? Rhythm'a'ning's Kerilie McDowall is no longer on the radio airwaves. I am currently exploring other modes of media and am very much enjoying the time to play guitar freely after formerly being very busy producing and hosting radio for 16+ years at CHLY and prior to this for a year or two at CFUV. Playing guitar is bringing me much joy, especially playing and reharmonizing some of my older compositions. Stay tuned, as you never know what I will get up to next with my creative activities!
You can watch me from my past days from 2015-2022 on television volunteer hosting and directing on SHAW Spotlight Nanaimo's The Show. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=The+Show+on+shaw
I am exploring different forms of media related to writing and radio work, so stay tuned for updates as I go along and explore further and thanks for your interest.
With thanks to Judy Stephan's Nanaimo and Voyager Magazine!
Musicians, thank you for your music and wonderful talent over the years when I was producing and hosting live radio at CHLY during the last 16 years. All of you have inspired me greatly. It has been an honour to work with each and every one of you. Feel free to get in touch at my new email address at keriliemcdowall (at) gmail (dot) com or call me. Stay in touch.
I am wishing you the Rhythm'a'ning listener, past guest or record label great success in all your endeavours and a happy future ahead. Stand by for future news!
With love to you and respect, Kerilie McDowall
HISTORY
"Rhythmn-a-ning," was first broadcasted originally for the first time, and for several years before the start of the internet age by Lise Waxer at CIUT in Toronto, Ontario who passed away tragically at a young age. The radio title Rhythm'a'ning remains in memoriam of Lise, who I spent a summer jazz workshop improvising with, always inspired by Lise's positive approach and her beautifully adventurous spirit. I first broadcasted the show as "Rhythm Changes," at CFUV Victoria, then the title was altered to Rhythm-a-ning at CFUV and CHLY, then to "Rhythm'a'ning" later in years at CHLY Nanaimo.

On Podcast Now
JAZZWOMEN 1920's-50's
On podcast now is a special interview on jazzwomen with American filmmaker Judy Chaikin with the women in jazz film entitled 'The Girls in the Band'. A wonderfully done documentary on jazz and female jazz musicians' place in history and other current important jazz women contributors in America. It is my hope that women's history in all styles of music will continue to be documented and celebrated. It is important work.
Film director Judy Chaikin is best known for her previous documentary films including 'Legacy of the Hollywood Blacklist', Chaikin's award winning film,' Girls in the Band' offers music and World War II history with important women's history facts that have not been presented before in one film. The film also discusses the issues of American racial segregation and racism and the experiences and trauma that the women jazz musicians endured as a result of those racist policies.
The rare and incredible documentary film footage was collected by researchers all over America for over 5 years and it is wonderfully in depth with stories, history and music. I recommend that you watch it twice to catch the finer details. For more on this film visit www.thegirlsintheband.com
Following the interview and film trailer with Judy Chaikin, rarer music from women from the 1920's-50s is presented as 'She-Jazz:The 1920s-50s-Part One' by radio and podcast host and producer Kerilie McDowall. A good part of the playlist was obtained from record collectors who are also radio producers/hosts in Canada and features some nice gems and some rare tracks.
Listen in to hear tracks starting from the 1920's followed by the 1940's International Sweethearts of Rhythm and Ina Ray Hutton and Phil Spitalny's Hour of Charm all female orchestras. Canadians also featured include ragtime's Vera Guilaroff and later from the west Vancouver's Eleanor Collins sings Ruth Lowe's, 'I'll Never Smile Again'. Then a trip back east to Ontario captures vocalist Phyllis Marshall in 1949. Listen to special Canadian anthology recordings from galarecords.ca including the anthology of talented Canadian female vocalists 'Canadian Divas-Swingin Easy' with Kay Foster, Norma Locke, Lorraine McAllister and more. Later in the show 1950's tracks from America's Mary Lou Williams and Clora Bryant are featured with later selections from Canadian vocalists Juliette and Georgia Dey.
