The Joy of Music & Improvisation
Five Centering Exercises
Play a long tone on a wind or string instrument or a Tibetan singing bowl for 10 minutes while breathing in for 5 counts and inhaling, then slowly exhaling. Bond with the oneness of the sound, feel it resonate in your body.
Chant Gregorian chants or with Tibetan Monks, or stay present singing long vowel sounds or ‘Om’ for an extended period. Absorb all thoughts with one centering tone letting it resonate with you. Enjoy the simple moment using your voice to centre yourself.
Stop to listen to Ravi Shankar’s Spirit of India. In the moment.
Lie down on a mat and listen to nature sounds or Indian Flute music while stretching and deep breathing or practicing yoga. Create a sacred space in your home. Listen to nature soundtracks infused with music often in the quiet or by your water fountain while diffusing essential oils.
a) Alternating between two chords on your favourite instrument, induce a creative and calmed state or trance-like calmness for improvisation and creating. Explore emotions of joy, happiness, optimism, excitement, energy, calm, centeredness, elation, and focus on the ectastic blissful divine.
b) Practice 5a) with a music partner or ensemble.
