"Being lucky to receive excellent mentorship from such an incredibly talented Shaw Spotlight team and an exceptionally gifted TV director, editor, and producer like Todd Jones, I had the chance to develop my television directing, producing, hosting, and editing skills. The In the Zone: Rick Kilburn film production and editing took place in my spare time when I was not freelancing as a writer/publicist and operating my guitar teaching business Canadian Online Guitar Lessons. I was also working as a music critic and writer for the globeโ€™s top international jazz magazine, DownBeat, and as an invited juror for one of Canadaโ€™s top music prizes, the CBCโ€™s Polaris Music Prize; both a major time commitment. I additionally was judging the JUNO Awards in 2019/20 {and caregiving.]

โ€ฆThe inspiring solo bass improvisations that Kilburn performed live at his home in one take for the film were amazing and effortlessly organic, so perfect for the documentary. Kilburn has spoken as a master musician about using the self while performing as a vehicle for spirit and that just makes sense."
โ€” Kerilie McDowall, In the Zone: Rick Kilburn short TV film Director, Toronto Film Magazine, Canada

"Music leads one to a path of spiritual intoxication. Once Kilburn was in the zone, time would lose all its tangible significance. Music is for him, the purest form of addiction. It would temporarily devour all of Kilburnโ€™s rational sensations. That was the exact moment when he played best. He was like his own master and apprentice."โ€” Anubhav Chakraborty, Scรฉnema, Paris, France

"Kilburn was deeply inspired by his father who was a jazz guitarist and president of The Cellar Jazz Society. Rick recalls spending many late nights there as a child, often falling asleep there as the music played. This also allowed a young Rick Kilburn to meet many famous jazz musicians such as Scott LaFarro, Wes Montgomery, and others. Occasionally he would even โ€œjamโ€ with them. The documentary explores Rick Kilburnโ€™s life, influences, inspirations, and moreโ€ฆโ€
